MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A confrontation with police at Miami International Airport led to a man being shot, a senior law enforcement official told CBS4 News.

It happened Thursday evening inside Terminal J, as airports in Florida scrambled to get travelers out of the state in anticipation of Hurricane Irma.

A man, allegedly armed with a knife, made his way into a restricted area of the terminal, according to Miami-Dade Police Director Juan J. Perez. He then entered a second restricted area, which allowed him entry onto the tarmac.

TSA agents took notice and called authorities.

An officer approached and shot him. It forced the terminal to be evacuated and shut down.

The man was transported to the hospital in unknown condition.
