MIRAMAR (CBSMiami) - A man and dog were shot during an overnight home invasion robbery.

Two masked men wearing all black entered the home in the 2600 block of Acapulco Drive just before 1 a.m. and encountered two women and a man.

The armed men demanded money, but when their captives refused they shot the one of the women's dog. They then shot the man through a closed door. The armed men then fled.

"I don't know what they got. They were just yelling a lot, trying to get something from this robbery. Unfortunately, it ended up with her dog being shot and my brother being shot," said "Ryan," the man's brother.

Ryan said his 23-year-old brother, who they call JC, was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed as stable. The dog was treated by Broward Animal Services and is expected to survive.

Ryan said JC doesn't live in the home where he was shot, he was visiting friends. He said he found out about the shooting when the police showed up at his door.

"The cops knocked on the front door of the and then gave me the news, gave me and my mom the news," said Ryan.

It was a knock on the door in the middle of the night that no one wants to get.

"They said he lost a lot of blood and they had to rush him over to the hospital," said Ryan.

Police said the two intruders got in through an unlocked door.

"Two armed robbers masked came in and they tried threatening her mom and her," said Ryan.

He said when JC refused to give them anything, that's what caused them to start shooting.

"Unfortunately it ended up with her dog being shot and my brother being shot," said Ryan.

Neighbors who spoke to CBS4 said they didn't hear anything last night and it wasn't until the police arrived and began going door to door that they knew something had happened.

Mary Williams says the shooting is a little unnerving and hopes that police can provide more information soon.

"I guess you're not going to say you're afraid but you just have to be careful what you're doing. We don't know if it's somebody they knew, we don't know that," said Williams.

Police have not released a description of their subjects. They're also trying to determine if the trio was targeted or the selected at random.
