POMPANO BEACH (CBSMiami) -- Trevor Mitchell's loved ones said he was known for helping people.

The former U.S. marine who served in Desert Storm lost his life near a Pompano Beach park while cooking on a grill. A day later, a makeshift memorial has been placed there in his honor, at N.W. 2nd Avenue and 15th Place.

"He was a really hardworking person, he would do anything for anyone, very jovial, very great spirit, caring, the list could go on and on," said Mitchell's cousin Tiffany Davis. "He was doing something for someone, he was barbecuing for a friend who had lost someone in their family."

Investigators said Mitchell was gunned down by his 46-year-old friend, Donel Bostick, after a verbal altercation. Bostick then got in a truck and took off, according to the sheriff's office.

"He was a wonderful person," said Mitchell's father Wallace. "He was Trevor, you know? He would say some things and not mean them. He didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings, he was a good-hearted person. This is just nonsense. To do that to a person is just cold-blooded murder. To empty the magazine into the person, he meant to do that all along."

Bostick reportedly ended up getting into an accident on I-95 and was stopped near Davie Blvd.

Initially, the Broward Sheriff's Office said he refused to get out of his car and fired a shot before he was arrested. Investigators don't believe Bostick was firing his weapon at the officers.

Mitchell's family said he and Bostick grew up together and may have been classmates.

Investigators are trying to determine why the suspect pulled the trigger.
