MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A man was rushed to the hospital after Miami Fire Rescue pulled him out of the waters behind Bayside Marketplace on Sunday night.

Rescue crews told CBS4 the 20-year-old man was at Bayside with friends and wasn't feeling well and that's when he went into the water at around 9 p.m.

Paramedics said the man might have been in the water for about five minutes or so before rescue divers found him, pulled him out and transported him to Ryder Trauma Center. Crews said he was in extremely critical condition.

The man reportedly went into the water near some boats and those boats had to be moved so divers could locate him.

Investigators are trying to figure out exactly why the man fell into the water.

"What we're trying to find out is did he decide to take a nap along the side of the pier next to a boat or was he trying to gain access to a boat that was tied off and slipped and fell in the water?" said Capt. Ignatius Carroll with Miami Fire Rescue.

Investigators said the man lives in South Florida and they are trying to reach the man's family and to learn more about what happened to him.
