Man Pleads Guilty In Smuggling Venture That Killed 4

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) —A man from the Bahamas who survived an alleged smuggling attempt which killed four Haitians, pleaded guilty to coming back to the U.S. after he was deported.

This means he faces up to 20 years in prison.

George Lewis was allegedly involved in what authorities said was a failed smuggling venture which killed four Haitian women.

According to a plea agreement filed Tuesday in Miami federal court, prosecutors plan to seek the dismissal of other charges against Lewis after his sentencing hearing July 25.

Lewis had also faced charges of smuggling resulting in death. He was among 11 people found clinging to the hull of a boat that capsized Oct. 16 off Miami. The four victims died underneath the boat.

A change of plea hearing for the boat's operator, Naaman Davis, is scheduled Thursday. He faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, smuggling resulting in death and illegal re-entry.
