DAYTONA BEACH SHORES (CBSMiami/AP) – About 20 minutes before the New Year, a 35-year-old lost his right hand in a firework explosion.

Gene Hartwell was injured by the explosion around 11:40 p.m. on New Year's Eve, according to the Volusia County Beach Safety Capt. Tammy Marris.
