MIAMI (CBSMiami) - An elderly man in a wheelchair was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Miami.

It happened Tuesday just after 6:30 p.m. at 1323 NW 54th Street.

Arriving officers found the man unconscious in the street, a motorized wheelchair which had been destroyed was found nearby.

A short time later, Miami Fire Rescue pronounced the man dead.

Miami police say the man, identified as 68-year-old Leonel Kindelan, was struck by a black SUV that may be a Chevrolet with front-end damage and may have a Miami Heat tag.

The victim's nephew spoke to CBS4's Peter D'Oench.

"I could not believe it. It was surreal. Great person. Very humble. Sincere. If he could give you the world, he would," said Alex Martir.

"He was an innocent man going to the store. I mean if you can help I would appreciate it," Martir added.

Kindelan lived near where the fatal hit occurred.

Police said Kindelan was also struck by a second vehicle that stayed at the scene.

If you can help, please call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305) 471-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $3,000.
