Man On Scooter Killed Trying To Cross Okeechobee Road

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – A West Palm Beach man was struck and killed while trying to cross a busy road.

Kyle Coffman, 22, was heading west on Okeechobee Road around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday when he struck 75-year old Michael Worth who was trying to cross at the intersection of West Drive in a mobility scooter.

Witnesses told Palm Beach Sheriff's deputies as Coffman approached the intersection a vehicle in a center lane in front of him hit the brakes suddenly and steered to the right to avoid hitting Worth who was in the middle of the road.

As Coffman looked to the right, Worth was right in front of him, according to the sheriff's office incident report. Coffman steered to the left to avoid hitting him too late.

Worth was thrown from his scooter onto the windshield of Coffman's Kia. He then hit the pavement.

Worth was taken to St. Mary's Hospital where died from his injuries.
