Man Impaled By Mangrove Branch In Keys

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami/AP) — A Key Largo man who hit a mangrove with his boat died after he was thrown from the boat and impaled on a branch.

Steven Douglas Reynolds, 64, was at the wheel of his 17-foot Islander boat in Blackwater Sound early Wednesday morning when the accident happened.

Reynolds was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was turned over to the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office.

His passenger, 62-year-old Dennis Ray Gobin was also ejected. He was flown to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami were he remains in serious condition.

Gobin voluntarily submitted a blood sample after the accident, as alcohol was suspected to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
