Man Gets Three Years For Slamming Dog Into Wall

SANFORD (CBSMiami/AP) — A central Florida man has been sentenced to three years in prison for killing his girlfriend's dog by slamming it into a wall.

The sentencing came after Jan Cornel Henry Jr., 42, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty.

Henry was arrested March 6 and his girlfriend called 911 screaming "he's killing my dog." A deputy found the dog wedged under Henry's couch with its head at an odd angle. The dog was dead.

Prosecutors say the couple had argued. The girlfriend told investigators she was trying to leave but Henry wouldn't surrender her dog.

Henry was given a mental evaluation but a psychologist found him competent to stand trial.
