Family questions BSO's response after man fatally shot by Broward deputy during alleged mental health crisis
A Broward County family is grieving and demanding answers after a deadly confrontation late Sunday afternoon.
That confrontation ended with deputies fatally shooting a loved one in the Franklin Park neighborhood near Sunrise Boulevard.
Incident streamed live
The encounter was live streamed by Dolison's relative, Shakira McFadden, who says he had a history of drug abuse and mental health issues. McFadden said Dolison had been using drugs for two days before the confrontation with the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO).
She added that family members had considered seeking a mental health evaluation for Dolison on Saturday but "it never happened."
Loved one: Situation could have been handled differently
McFadden criticized deputies for not bringing in crisis negotiators, saying she believed the situation could have been handled differently.
"All of my nephews and nieces they don't have a father now," she said. "I wish BSO had called in a negotiator to get Dolison to put down his weapon."
Deputies plead for surrender during livestream
In the livestream, deputies are heard pleading with Dolison to surrender. At one point, he emerged from his home pointing a gun at his head before retreating inside. Moments later, gunfire erupted.
BSO later said a deputy saw Dolison at the door while his wife remained inside the home. According to the sheriff's office, Dolison fired his weapon first, forcing a deputy to return fire.
BSO provides statement
When asked about protocols for deploying negotiators, BSO provided a statement:
"In cases like this the suspect's actions and safety of all involved dictates how law enforcement responds. Detectives confirmed someone was in the house when the suspect fired first."
