Man Charged In DUI Crash That Injured Officer

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A Miramar man has been charged in accident that severely injured a Pembroke Pines police officer.

On May 4th, Officer Ben Burke was driving east on Pines Boulevard around 3:30 a.m. when he was t-boned at the intersection of Douglas Road by a Jeep Cherokee driven by Brandon Ward, according to police.

Witnesses said Burke, 43, had the green light when the Jeep drove into his path and he struck its passenger side. On impact, both vehicles slid to the southeast corner of the intersection, where the Jeep rolled onto its driver's side and came to rest against a tree.

Both Ward, 31, and Burke were taken to Memorial Regional Hospital.

On Thursday Ward was arrested a and charged with DUI with Serious Bodily Injury to Another and DUI with Blood Alcohol Content >.15. During a hearing Friday, bond was set at $10,000.

Burke continues to recover from injuries suffered during the crash, and has not yet been able to return to work.
