Man Charged In Carjacking, Deadly Gas Station Shooting

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – An arrest has been made in a deadly shooting at a Lauderdale Lakes gas station over the weekend.

On Sunday, just after 2 p.m., Broward Sheriff's deputies were sent to the Citgo station at 4449 N State Road 7 to check out reports of a shooting.

Kemar Austin, 29, had pulled into the gas station and was sitting in his parked car when 27-yer old Dwayne Dyer reportedly walked up to car and fired multiple shots into it before driving off in a Toyota.

Austin was able to drive for about 10 blocks south on State Road 7 before he careened into a median wall. He was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A witness to the gas station shooting was able to give deputies a description of the vehicle and the license plate number. The car belonged to Dyer's girlfriend's mother.

When the deputies went to her home, Dyer spotted them and fled on foot.

The sheriff's office said Dyer spotted a woman and her three kids in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Dyer reportedly jumped in the woman's car and drove off. The woman called 911 and gave the emergency operator a description of her car and its tag number.

The sheriff's office said a deputy in Lauderdale Lakes spotted the car heading southbound on State Road 7 near the Boulevard of Champions. When he walked onto the roadway and ordered the driver to stop, Dyer allegedly hit the gas and forced the deputy to jump to safety.

Dyer reportedly only made it short distance before he crashed the car and ran off. After a short foot pursuit, he was taken into custody.

Detectives have not found a connection between Austin and Dyer and believe robbery could have been the motive behind the shooting.

Dyer is charged with first degree murder, carjacking and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
