FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A 20-year old man who reportedly ran down and killed a young boy as he fled police faced a judge Monday.
Lex Eugene is charged with vehicular homicide in the death of 5-year old Jayden Readon.
In court on Monday, the child s mother and aunt lashed out at Eugene.
Jayden and his brother Carter, who are both from Miramar, were visiting their grandparents in Lantana when the accident happened.
Saturday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. when Boynton Beach tried to stop Eugene for reckless driving, he lost control at the intersection of Miner Road and Federal Highway
Police say Eugene hit Jayden as he walked with his great-grandparents and brother to the park. Eugene ended up crashing into a fence. He reportedly tried to take off on foot, but was taken into custody by Boynton Beach police.
Jayden was taken to Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach. His grandfather, after the court hearing, said he felt the boy was going to be an engineer.
"(He would) take aluminum foil and make dragons, and everything you would imagine," Henry Readon said. "He takes wood and builds it. This guy was an unusual kid."
Ccndolences are pouring in on Jayden s mother s Facebook page. One person posted, "so sorry for you and your family's loss." Another wrote, "my heart goes out to you.Pray for strength."
Eugene was also charged with possession of heroin, driving without a license, and trying to run after the crash.
Since he was on probation after getting out of prison in December, Eugene was denied bail for now.
