Man Accused Of Using Bomb Threats In Publix Extortion Attempt

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Hallandale Beach man who reportedly robbed a Dania Beach bank last December allegedly tried to extort money from Publix by threatening to blow up their stores.

The 11 count indictment states that Brian Henderson, 49, attempted to obtain money by sending several threatening emails to Publix in which he threatened to damage Publix stores through the use of explosives.

Henderson is also accused of detonating a pipe bomb at the Publix store in Dania Beach. The pipe bomb partially detonated but due to faulty construction did not cause significant damage and was not immediately discovered.

A separate criminal complaint has charged Henderson in connection with product tampering threats made to a consumer products company in New Jersey.

On December 13th, 2013, Henderson tried to rob a Chase bank, located at 300 East Dania Beach Blvd. shortly before noon. He reported told a teller he had a bomb and wanted cash.

After receiving an undisclosed amount of money, Henderson went to leave the bank and was shot by one of the first Broward Sheriff's deputies to arrive on the scene.

Henderson survived. He was handcuffed, put on a stretcher and taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment. The money stolen from the bank was recovered.
