Making The Grade: New School Scores Show Less A's & F's

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — The Florida Department of Education has released the second round of school grades linked to the high-stakes test that is based primarily on Common Core standards.

The FDOE issued the grades for 3,211 schools across the state.

The preliminary grades given out show that 741 schools received A grades and 749 schools received a B. A total of 103 schools earned an F grade while 372 schools were given a D. The remaining 1,246 schools got a C grade.

While the overall number of A grades has declined, the number of F grades also dropped approximately 50-percent.

Highlights from South Florida include:

Broward

  • There are 62 schools graded "A" in 2016 and 63 schools graded "B".
  • 20 schools improved their grade from a "D" to a "C" or higher
  • There are 20 fewer schools graded "F" than in 2015, dropping from 32 "F" grades in 2015 to 12 "F" grades in 2016.
  • Nine schools improved their grade from an "F" to a "C" or higher

 

Miami-Dade

  • There are 124 schools graded "A" in 2016 and 96 schools graded "B".
  • 53% of schools are graded "A" or "B".
  • 37 schools improved their grade from a "D" to a "C" or higher
  • There are 20 fewer schools graded "F" than in 2015, dropping from 28 "F" grades in 2015 to eight "F" grades in 2016.
  • Six schools improved their grade from an "F" to a "C" or higher

 

Monroe

  • Eight schools are graded "A" in 2016 and 6 schools graded "B".
  • 88% of schools are graded "A" or "B".
  • There are no schools graded "D" or "F" in the district.

 

This is the second set of grades that are based on the Florida Standards Assessment, but this is the first time that education officials have incorporated student learning gains into the calculation.
