Lower Gas Prices, Stronger Job Market May Make For Busy Memorial

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Lower gas prices and a stronger job market is paving the way for the highest number of drivers in over a decade on the roads this Memorial Day.

Despite oil reaching its highest price of the year, according to the AAA, the average for gasoline in the nation declined Sunday for the first time since rising 27 cents during a period of 25-days.

The AAA says that gas prices being exactly $1 cheaper than this time last year will make for busier streets Memorial Weekend—but not because of cheaper gas during the weekend.

"Typically it's not the price during the holiday weekend, but gas prices in the weeks leading up to the holiday that have the biggest effect on motorists' plans. Gas prices typically hit their yearly peak this time of year, but the price of oil has been on an upward trend for eight consecutive weeks, so gas prices may not hit their ceiling until oil prices find equilibrium," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for the AAA – The Auto Club Group in a press release.

The AAA says 32-million Americans are estimated to drive 50 miles of more over the holiday weekend—which is a 5 percent increase from last year.

Looking forward, AAA said they remain "confident that gasoline prices will not reach $3 a gallon this year."
