MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A South Florida vet is helping rehabilitate a pelican found with his pouch slashed and his wing hacked off.

This is just one of 50 to 60 pelicans who have been reported to have the same injuries, according to South Florida Veterinarian Don Harris.

While he was able to repair the bird's pouch and wings, the bird's future will not be in the wild.

"He can never be released because he is missing a wing. He'll live in one of the rehab facilities as an education bird," said Harris.
