Lightning Strike Leads To Large Brush Fires
PEMBROKE PINES (CBSMiami) – Firefighters are working two fires in western Broward County that are creating a lot of smoke across parts of South Florida.
The fires three miles west of US 27 and Krome Avenue were started by lightning strikes, according to the Division of Forestry.
Each fire is roughly 500 acres and firefighters are going to monitor them overnight as they are not threatening structures or communities.
However, it can be seen and smelled all over parts of western Broward County. Some residents nearby say it is good that the brush is burning away.
"It's a blessing. This needs to happen. If this would've have happened last year, it wouldn't be happening now. It's been about 6 years since the fire's burned this section. It's absolutely necessary," said Keith Jones with Mack's Fish Camp.
Meteorologists said the winds would shift out of the north overnight and could push the smoke into metro Miami-Dade County.
