La Canfora: NFL Free Agency is "Fool's Gold"

CBS Sports NFL reporter Jason La Canfora joined the Big O Show on WQAM to share his analysis of some of the Miami Dolphins' rather aggressive moves in Week 1 of NFL Free Agency.

"If you can keep him healthy, if he has a sound mind and sound body," La Canfora says of signing tight end Jordan Cameron, "then you've got a heck of a football player there."

As for landing the big fish in Ndamukong Suh, the NFL Insider has a wide array of questions after the Dolphins shelled out $60 million guaranteed to make the defensive tackle the highest paid defensive player in the league.

"If you're looking at it as purely a football move, that it's supposed to provide a $20 million-a-year difference in your football team, boy, you're not going to find it," La Canfora said. "That's really not how this works but it's a business decision.

"Will it provide ancillary efficiencies for ownership? We don't know. Will it sort of raise the glitz and glamour attached to the franchise? Will it help sell tickets? Will it move the meter down there?"

And this next part, Dolphins fans might not want to hear.

"Free agency -- it's fools gold in the NFL. You don't build teams that way.

"Will they get ultimate bang for their buck? I don't think so. I really don't. Are they now a playoff team because they signed him in and of itself? No, I don't think so. Will they win a Super Bowl in that three year window?"
