Road rage shooting on I-95 leaves 3 hurt, including woman, young girl

FORT LAUDERDALE -- Authorities were searching for a suspect who shot and wounded three people late Sunday night when a minor traffic collision on Interstate 95 escalated into gunfire, resulting in the closure of several freeway lanes and massive traffic gridlock.

A man and woman inside one of the vehicles were wounded and taken to a local hospital.

The woman's injuries were considered to be potentially life-threatening while the man was expected to recover, authorities said in a written statement.

A young girl, who was in a separate vehicle, was also shot during the incident and taken for treatment. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, according to police.

According to the Broward County Sheriff's Office, investigators were called around 8:30 p.m. to southbound I-95 between the Sunrise and Broward Boulevard exits.

Investigators said a white BMW side-swiped a Nissan Sentra carrying the two gunshot victims.

An argument occurred between the people in both cars and the BMW driver opened fire on the man and woman in the Nissan, police said.

Investigators said the young girl was shot by the BMW driver but it was not clear if that victim was an innocent bystander hit by a passing bullet.

Investigators are hoping someone comes forth with information to find the gunman.

"If you were driving on I-95 southbound between 8 and 9 last night, Sunday night, perhaps a lot of people have Go Pros, cameras on their front windshields, maybe they saw something and thought you see things like that on 95 all the time, unfortunately, this turned violent," said BSO spokeswoman Miranda Grossman.

Police closed several lanes of I-95 as they searched for clues, resulting in massive traffic gridlock for weekend motorists.

Investigators say if you are ever in a road rage situation, keep a cool head.

"If you find yourself in this situation, do not engage, take a deep breath. Don't engage, pull off somewhere safe, call 911 and if you can safely take a picture of that vehicle, take a picture and do that. It's an absolutely scary situation to have happen," Grossman said.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
