Toddler fatally shot in Pompano Beach

FORT LAUDERDALE -- A Broward County man has been arrested in connection with the death of a toddler who was shot by an unsecured gun, authorities said Sunday.

Lius Appolon, 33, of Pompano Beach, has been charged with one count of manslaughter with a firearm. He was taken to the Broward jail, according to a written statement by the Broward County Sheriff's Office. He was being held on a $50,000 bond after appearing in bond court Sunday.

The child, whose age and identity were not immediately released, died after being flown to a local hospital following the shooting around 1:45 p.m. near the 500 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Pompano Beach, investigators said.

According to the statement, the child, who was not identified, apparently suffered a gunshot wound from the gun that was not placed in a secure location.

Officials did not disclose the relation between Appolon and the victim.

The county's Child Protective Investigation Section was informed about the incident.
