Inspectors Check Progress Of Repairs At N Miami Apartment Building

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Anxious and frustrated residents spent Thursday waiting in front of the Gold King apartment building on N.E. 6th Ave in North Miami hoping for clearance to return home.

More than 250 tenants were forced out a week ago when part of the roof collapsed under heavy rain.

Residents fled to shelters hotel rooms and friend's homes.

The city put up a sign that the building was uninhabitable.

The management was told that the air conditioning system and elevators needed to be in working order before they would give the green light.

"I'm optimist," manager Roberto Toussaint told CBS4 News although he concedes it's not up to him.

From Chopper 4 work crews could be seen on the roof of the four story building Thursday afternoon.  Touissant also downplayed complaints from some residents that their apartments weren't secure and belongings missing.

"We have security accompany tenants" he says.
