Inmate Jumps To Death Day Before Sentencing

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A 72-year old man convicted in the murder of his ex-wife and her fiancé jumped to his death from the second floor landing of his cell block the day before he was to be sentenced.

Michael Stephen Spiegel was convicted in August for the 2014 deaths of his 70-year-Marilyn Spiegel and 72-year-old Harry Carlip. He was scheduled to appear in court in Fort Myers on Monday afternoon.

Spiegel had been in the Lee County Jail since he was arrested on May 15, 2014, the same day of the murders. His former wife was scheduled to marry Carlip two days later in Fort Myers.

Spiegel held a doctorate degree in physics.
