Inmate Found Dead At TGK

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Many questions are being asked after  a jail inmate was able to commit suicide while in custody.

It was just four hours after a bond hearing for inmate Edwardo Calderin, 46, that he reportedly hanged himself.

Calderin was taken into custody Wednesday night on multiple charges of sexual battery on a minor. The charges stemmed from alleged incidents nearly nine years ago. He was denied bond on several of those counts.

His body was found while in custody at Miami Dade's Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Facility. Calderin was awaiting return to the Metro West Facility when he hanged himself.

Former Miami-Dade correctional officer and  system critic Walter Clark said problems at TGK and across the corrections  board continue in the aftermath of the retirement of the controversial corrections director Tim Ryan.

"It's business as usual. Who is watching? Who is watching these inmates?" said Clark.

Clark described the corrections system, particularly the booking process at TGK as "a powder keg."

Relatives told CBS4's Michele Gillen that they are in shock over his death and are looking for answers. They declined to appear on camera for this story on CBS4.

Miami-Dade corrections officials said the inmate committed suicide by hanging and says there is an investigation being conducted by Miami-Dade Police. CBS4 also reached out to Miami-Dade Police, but they would not provide any further details.
