Immigrant Groups Hold Forum On Driver's Licenses
MIAMI (AP) — Miami activists say some 1 million Florida drivers don't have a license, much less insurance because of their immigration status. And that puts everyone else on the road at risk.
Immigrant advocates will hold a forum Saturday at the Mission Altagracia in Miami to discuss the issue. Last year, Gov. Rick Scott vetoed a bill that would have provided licenses for many Florida residents who are living in the country illegally. The groups tried unsuccessfully to get the state legislature to take up a similar bill this year.
Some 11 states have passed legislation allowing all motorists access to driver's licenses regardless of their status, but opponents say the state should not reward those who come to the country illegally or who overstay their visas.
