MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Hundreds of flights nationally remained delayed or cancelled Monday morning in the aftermath of a major snow storm that hit the East coast over the weekend.

Even for travelers in South Florida, the effects of the massive blizzard are still being felt at Miami International Airport (MIA).

"Some of the other people in my group came from out east and two of them didn't make it who were supposed to be on this trip with me. They were in D.C. so they had to stay behind," said one traveler. "And then one man who is from Massachusetts had to go to Providence, Rhode Island and fly direct this morning."

Newark and Washington airports are still causing problems for travelers out of Miami.

"They told me they've cancelled a lot of flights from here to New Jersey because of snow," said another traveler, "I don't know what to do."

A couple stuck at MIA told CBS4's Natalia Zea they have very little hope their flight will make it out to Washington, D.C. later in the day.

"We had an eight hour lay over...we'll see," said traveler Emily Cooper.

As of 5 p.m., 31 flights coming in and out of MIA were cancelled and six were delayed due to severe weather. Flights affected include those departing and coming from Chicago, Baltimore, Richmond,  Newark, Washington, D.C., New York and Louisville.

There are also a number of flight delays and cancellations out of Broward County at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

As of 12:30 p.m. , 13 flights had been cancelled and 59 others were delayed.

The said delays are expected to last around three hours.

While there is still frustration over the cancellations and delays, it is getting better.

Last week, ahead of the blizzard, thousands of flights were cancelled or delayed including those coming in and out of South Florida.
