House Tries To Keep E-Cigs Away From Kids

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) - The Florida House has unanimously passed a bill that would ban the sales of electronic cigarettes to minors.

Rep. Ronald "Doc" Renuart said studies show rapid increases in the use of electronic cigarettes by minors. Supporters of the bill also contend that use of the trendy tubes, which deliver nicotine, can lead to young people smoking tobacco.

Wednesday's vote came after a lengthy debate Tuesday about earlier House proposals that would have prevented cities and counties from approving new regulations on the sales of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes --- a concept known as state "preemption."

Those proposals were eliminated before the bill was approved Wednesday.

The Senate also has passed the bill, but a House amendment approved Tuesday will require the measure to go back to the Senate for another vote.
