House Approves Sales Tax Holidays Bill

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — Under a bill approved by the Florida House, Floridians would get four sales holidays this year.

The House voted 106-11 for a tax cut package that includes sales tax holidays for school supplies, gym memberships, energy efficient appliances and hurricane preparation supplies. Gov. Rick Scott wanted a 10-day back to school sales tax holiday, but the House would limit it to just one weekend.

The tax package would also permanently exempt sales taxes charged on car seats and booster seats.

The House package also calls for a three-day holiday on energy efficient appliances and a week-long holiday on gym memberships.

Some Democrats voted against the bill (HB 5601) because a tax shift included the package would cost local governments money.
