ORLANDO (CBSMiami) - In an act of humanity and charity, Orlando Health and Florida Hospital will not bill survivors of the Pulse nightclub shooting for their out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Instead, the hospitals will write off the estimated $5.5 million in health care costs.

Orlando Health has said it plans to explore options to help some of the survivors with their ongoing medical costs.

Forty-nine people were killed, 53 were wounded in the June 12 attack by Omar Mateen who was shot and killed by a SWAT team which stormed the nightclub just after 5 a.m. to rescue more than a dozen hostages.

Mateen was buried at the Muslim Cemetery of South Florida in Hialeah Gardens.
