Three teens charged after armed carjacking ends with deputy shooting, Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office says

Neighbor recalls armed carjacking suspects being arrested in front of home in Homestead

Three teens have been charged in connection with an armed carjacking that led to one of the trio, who was brandishing a rifle, being shot by a deputy, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office.

The suspect who was shot has been identified by authorities as 18-year-old Stephan Jones. He faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, improper exhibition of a firearm, and resisting an officer without violence.

The other suspects have been named as 18-year-old Tyquawn Davis, who has been charged with armed carjacking and resisting without violence, and a 16-year-old male, who is charged with resisting without violence.

Deputies respond to armed carjacking

According to MDSO, just before 8:55 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, deputies responded to a call about an armed carjacking in the area of Southwest 279th Street and Southwest 127th Avenue involving three suspects.

When deputies arrived, the suspects abandoned the stolen vehicle and ran from the scene. During a foot pursuit of the suspects, MDSO said one deputy fired his service weapon, striking Jones.

Deputy provides lifesaving aid

The deputy began lifesaving measures on Jones until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived and transported him to the hospital, MDSO said. The suspect's condition wasn't immediately released, but authorities said he was stable.

The other two suspects were taken into custody — one in front of a woman's townhome.

Resident describes chaotic arrest

"After a while, I started hearing the screaming and the ruckus right in front of my house," the resident said. "And they're arresting one of them here."

FDLE investigating deputy's actions

MDSO said two firearms were also recovered from the scene. No deputies or civilians were injured.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.

The investigation continues. CBS News Miami will provide updates when more information becomes available.
