FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A Fort Lauderdale homeowner is picking up the pieces after an 80-foot tree - struck down by lightning - crushed his convertible BMW.

"I was the lucky one.  I got the lottery," said homeowner Hector Berrios while laughing.

He says the car was unusable anyway. He's just thankful nobody got hurt.

"This tree blew up. It just blew up completely. It never just hit it. It just blew it up. There are pieces everywhere," said Berrios.

The rain, thunder, and lighting came at 1 a.m. on Tuesday. It exploded the tree. It pealed the bark and scattered pieces through the neighborhood.

The homeowner who has been living there for 27 years said he had never seen anything like it but was feeling lucky nothing else happened.

"I sleep right in that corner. That guy had fallen down there, I would not be speaking to you today," said Berrios.
