Lightning Strike Gives Man Shocking Wake Up Call

MIAMI (CBSMiami) --One man really got a wake up call Saturday morning after lightning struck his house.

At first glance, the house doesn't look that bad but the damage was enough that the man and his family won't be able to spend the night at his home.

The lightning struck the man's house around 6:00 a.m.

The man said he first thought it was one of those lightning strikes that knocks the power out then he started to smell smoke.

With his wife and sister-in-law inside the house, he called 911. Fire crews arrived and saw smoke coming from the roof.

"The lighting bolt actually caused damage to the roof, caused a fire in the attic which resulted in moderate damage to the structure," said Chief Tony Garcia of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The fire department said lightning strikes are not as uncommon as you think in that part of South Florida.

"We have quite a number of houses that catch on fire as a result of lightning strikes, either directly or through power lines," said Chief Garcia.

The overnight storm also left some flooding in Key Biscayne. Even large trucks had to navigate slowly through the inches of water.

It's a reminder that rainy season is right around the corner.

The man has no electricity in his home due to the lightning strike. There is also a hole in the roof that needs to be repaired, so he and his wife will stay with their daughter.
