Historic Promotion To Take Place At Miami PD

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – History will be made at the Miami Police Department as the first female will be appointed to Assistant Chief of Police.

Prior to this historic move, the title of "Major" was considered the highest held by a sworn, female employee of the agency.

Overtown neighborhood Commander Anita M. Najiy, a 31-year veteran of the agency, will be promoted by Chief Manuel Orosa.

A ceremony will be held to mark the occasion Wednesday, February 12, 2014.

"I am privileged to select Commander Najiy as one of my assistant chiefs," said Chief Orosa. "I am doubly honored because our nation commemorates Black History the same month of her promotion." He added: "Our 116-year city has witnessed many milestones, but this, by far, is one of the greatest of our history."

Commander Najiy will head the Administration Division of the agency, which encompasses crucial units such as Budget and Personnel Resource Management.

The department will also promote Esther Farmer to the title of Commander at the ceremony.
