Health Officials Warn Of Possibly Deadly Bacteria In Beaches

MIAMI (CBSMIAMI) -- Florida Health officials are warning residents of a bacteria found in beaches that could have some deadly consequences.

It's called Vibrio vulnificus it's a bacterium that lives in warm sea water.

Health officials are warning those with open wounds, cuts or scrapes should avoid getting into the water since they can be exposed to the bacteria.

According to the Florida Health Department, the bacteria can invade the bloodstream and possibly cause life-threatening illnesses with symptoms like fever, chills, septic shock .

The bacteria can also cause a skin infection that may lead to skin breakdown and ulcers.

Health officials say there is no evidence  that an infected person can transmit the bacteria to another.

So far this year, a total of two people in Florida have died from the bacteria and seven people have reported being infected.

For those infected, antibiotics are used, and if necessary, amputation of the affected limb.
