Group Receives Grant Money To Restore Miami Marine Stadium

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The group leading the effort to restore and re-open the Miami Marine Stadium has gotten a financial boost.

The Getty Foundation has awarded a $180-thousand grant to "Friends of Miami Marine Stadium," according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald. The group plans to put the funds toward hiring specialists to come up with way to make the necessary repairs and restorations.

The Miami Marine Stadium, considered a Modernist icon, was built in 1963. Performances there help launch the careers of Florida icons Jimmy Buffett and Gloria Estefan. In 1992 it was deemed unsafe after Hurricane Andrew.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation named the stadium a national treasure.
