Groundbreaking For New Animal Services Shelter In Dade

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - In an effort to relieve constant over crowding at its current Animal Services shelter in Medley, a groundbreaking will be held Friday at the future site of the new shelter in Doral.

When completed, the 70,000 square foot shelter at 3651 NW 79th Avenue, will be able to house more dogs and cats. It will also feature an adoption center, improved clinic facilities and quarantine areas which will not only protect animals but help prevent the spread of disease.

Construction of the new shelter will be managed by the county's Internal Services Department who will work closely with Animal Services staff to ensure the priorities and needs of the animals under its protection are a top priority.

"My administration has made it a top priority to ensure that we all work together to make this new Animal Shelter a reality for our community," said Mayor Carlos Gimenez in a statement. "Today, we celebrate the long-awaited groundbreaking as another milestone toward our common goal of a No-Kill community and improving the conditions for all the animals that we are placed in our care."

Every year Animal Services provides care for more than 27,000 unwanted dogs and cats.
