Gov. Responds To FL. Supreme Court's Request On Pizzi Suspension

MIAMI LAKES (CBSMiami) -- Florida Governor Rick Scott has responded to the Supreme Court's request to show cause as to why the suspension of suspended Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi not be revoked.

Pizzi was acquitted of federal bribery charges and requested Miami Lakes reinstate him as Mayor. He sued to be reinstated to the office.

In the document filed, Tuesday Governor Scott's attorneys said in the filing, he is "not required to reinstate the official, then he is not required to revoke the suspension order either."

They also referred to the town charter saying Pizzi's term ended "when a new elected mayor of Miami Lakes took office on October 8, 2013."

In the document, they argued since his term ended that day, revoking Pizzi's suspension would only cause confusion "into the issue of the mayorship of Miami Lakes."

They argued Pizzi "is not entitled to reinstatement because his term, and therefore his suspension, have expired. Because his suspension has expired, the Governor can no longer revoke it."

Pizzi's attorney Benedict Kuehne released a statement saying, "For a Governor whose first responsibility is to execute the laws, not to create new laws to suit his own personal agenda, his continued refusal to enforce his clear and mandatory legal obligation is reprehensible, demanding an investigation into his failure to act."
