GM Recalls Natural Gas Powered Vans

DETROIT  (WWJ) - General Motors is recalling around 3,200 natural gas-powered cargo vans because of the potential for a gas leak, which could cause a fire or explosion.

"Certain vehicles may have a CNG high-pressure regulator that can leak natural gas into the atmosphere," read a statement from the carmaker. "Dealers or fleet operators will inspect and, if necessary, replace the regulator. Parts are on order and customers will be notified by letter when they are available."

The recall involves Chevrolet Express and GMC Savannah full size vans, from the 2011 to 2014 model years that have been adapted to run on compressed natural gas. The vast majority of these vehicles are in commercial fleets.

"GM is not aware of any fires, crashes or injuries as a result of this issue," read the statement.

Repair parts are currently on order, says GM, and owners of the recalled vehicles will get a letter telling them when the parts will be available.

This has been a record year for recalls for General Motors, and the auto industry as a whole. GM alone has ordered more than 60 recalls involving more than 29 million vehicles.
