Gimenez Wants Body Cameras On Every Police Officer
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Amid criticism over possible police misconduct in Ferguson, Mo., Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said he wants a camera on every police officer.
According to our news partners The Miami Herald, Gimenez vowed to make the body cameras mandatory for all patrol officers in the county.
He made the announcement at a budget town hall meeting in Little Haiti on Thursday.
Gimenez's proposed budget includes 500 mini cameras meant to outfit half of the county's patrol force.
The cameras are made by Taser and are small enough to be placed on glasses or a hat.
Gimenez told the group that, "I think if there had been a camera, a lot of what happened could have been avoided....Police officers, everyone once in a while may step out of line. But there also are a lot of frivolous allegations against them."
His announcement comes at a time when he is at odds with the police union who is against his budget that proposed job cuts for Miami-Dade's law enforcement.
Police Benevolent Association President John Rivera told the paper, the union had a "pending" grievance over the body-cameras.
