Gerard Gallant: 'We're Really Close'

The Florida Panthers made a massive leap last season, finishing with 91 points after 66 (2nd worst in NHL) the year before.

Can this year's squad be a playoff team?

"Obviously it takes 23 guys to have a real good team," Gerard Gallant said on the Joe Rose Show, "but these young guys are improving every year and the better they get the better our team's gonna get. They had all good Training Camps, they came in in real good shape. So we're looking forward to another good season.

"Our team's getting better and we know that but it's about scoring more goals and it's about keeping more goals out of your net... There's lots of things to improve on and we're really close and we know that. So just hopefully we'll have that same improvement this year and we'll be battling for that playoff spot again."

The Panthers open their season this Saturday night in Philadelphia at 7 p.m.
