FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A South Florida veterinarian is being credited with saving several dogs that were hit by a snowmobile during the Alaskan Iditarod.

On Saturday, Dr. Lynel Tocci, from Lauderdale Veterinary Specialists, was volunteering at the race in Nulato, Alaska when the dogs were brought to her check point for treatment.

The dogs were running with four-time Iditarod champion Jeff King when they were struck by the snowmobile, King reported. One dog was killed.

Dr. Tocci, a board-certified specialist in veterinary emergency and critical care, treated one dog suffering from serious shock after being knocked unconscious. Another suffered fractures to its leg, needed a splint and was given pain relief.

According to reports, the snowmobiler, Arnold Demoski, 26, admitted to police he was driving drunk.

He was arrested by Alaskan State Troopers and faces several charges including assault, reckless driving and criminal mischief.
