Ft. Lauderdale Police Chief Stepping Down, Joining BSO

FT. Lauderdale (CBSMiami) -- Ft. Lauderdale Police Chief Frank Adderley is trading one badge for another after announcing his resignation.

Adderley, 55, served with the city of Ft. Lauderdale for more than three decades.

He'll next join the Broward Sheriff's Office, offered the position of colonel, he told the Sun-Sentinel.

Adderley made the announcement in front of 200 colleagues at a meeting Wednesday afternoon.

A south Florida native, he grew up in Ft. Lauderdale, went to Stranahan High School and attended college at Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida International University and the FBI national academy for police executives.

Adderley joined the force in 1980 and would go on to become the first African-American promoted to the ranks of major, assistant chief and chief of police in the department.
