Fort Lauderdale police investigating after 14-year-old boy struck by car

FORT LAUDERDALE -- A 14-year-old boy is being treated for life-threatening injuries after a bad crash in Fort Lauderdale.

Police said in a written statement that police were called to NW 13th Street and NW 8th Avenue shortly after 4:30 p.m. on a report of a child struck.

The boy had been riding a scooter at the time of the crash, authorities said.

CBS4's Jacqueline Quynh talked with a witness on the scene -- and why she feels speed bumps are not enough.

A witness, who did not want to show her face, told CBS4 she ran over to help.

"And when I ran there, I see the baby laying, and I turn around and call a friend down the street and asked the friend 'Where does this baby stay at?'"

It turns out, she said, he was someone who lives near Northwest 8th Avenue and Northwest 13th street where the crash happened.

"And I ran immediately and got the older brother to come down here to check on his brother," the witness said.

Fort Lauderdale Police say they got the call after 4:30 Friday afternoon.

That a 14-year-old boy was hit while riding a scooter.

He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

"One Samaritan stopped and started giving him chest compressions."

The woman we spoke with says he wasn't responding when she got to him, and it was hard for her because she has kids of her own.

"A 14-year-old child lying in the middle of the street, a puddle of blood, his life was in front of him," she said.

She recalls the time of this accident was during an evening rush hour, that's why she wonders if a traffic light would better direct the flow, and potentially prevent something like this in the future.

"They were just telling me two days ago, there was a big accident by the school, and a car almost went into a resident's house, people are tired of the speeding you have to do something."

Fort Lauderdale Police are still investigating what led up to the crash.
