TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) -- Two former sheriff's deputies were arrested on charges related to impersonating a Drug Enforcement Administration agent.

The defendants, Don Wheeler and Michael Maine, face several charges including extortion and impersonating an officer.

Wheeler, who is not currently a law enforcement officer and wasn't at the time of the alleged criminal activity, is accused of pretending to be a DEA agent in an effort to stop Maine's wife from following through on divorce proceedings.

Authorities said they created counterfeit DEA credentials to pass Wheeler off as a federal agent and told associates of Maine's wife that she was involved in a drug trafficking investigation.

Both men face more than 30 years in prison.
