FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A former teachers union president has been sentenced to prison after he was found guilty of corruption earlier this year.

Pat Santeramo was sentenced to 60 months in state prison and another 60 months probation.

In January, he was convicted on eight corruption charges stemming from his time running the Broward Teachers Union from 2006 to 2011.

Prosecutors argued that Santeramo inflated contractors' bills, reimbursed them for illegal campaign contributions, and received more than $160,000 in kickbacks during his tenure.

As a condition of his probation, Santeramo was ordered to pay restitution of $163,500 to two insurance companies.
