1 dead Florida Turnpike crash that snarled morning commute in Broward County, Florida Highway Patrol says
One person was killed and another was injured after a crash on the Florida Turnpike in Broward County early Friday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Officials said a Mercedes Benz SUV was stopped in the center lane southbound on the Florida Turnpike at Interstate 595 in Davie when a tractor-trailer, which was traveling in the center lane, was unable to avoid it.
The tractor-trailer then crashed into the back of the SUV, pushing it in a southeasterly direction and into a concrete median wall, according to FHP.
The driver of the SUV, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. A passenger in the SUV, who was only identified by FHP as a 36-year-year-old Miami woman, died at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 53-year-old Miami man, was not injured.
"Our thoughts are with the family and friends who had loved ones involved in this tragic accident," FedEx said in a statement. "Safety is our highest priority, and we are cooperating fully with local authorities in this investigation."
That crash severely impacted the Friday morning commute leading to traffic delays behind the crash due to several lanes needing to be closed for the investigation.
The crash remains under investigation.
Editor's Note: A previous version of this story said two people were killed in the crash. FHP later clarified only one person died in the incident.
