GAINESVILLE (CBSMiami/AP) -- A mother and gun rights activist remains hospitalized after she was accidentally shot by her own child.
Capt. Joseph Wells of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office says Jamie Gilt, 31, is too heavily medicated to speak with investigators.
Wells tells The Gainesville Sun that Gilt is improving and deputies are checking on her progress daily.
Gilt was shot March 8th while driving with her 4-year-old son.
According to the sheriff's office, the boy was in the backseat and got ahold of a loaded gun that was in the vehicle, managing to pull the trigger.
The shot went through Gilt's seat and struck her in the back. The boy wasn't injured.
The Florida Department of Children and Families is investigating. Authorities have said Gilt could face charges.
Gilt, a pro-gun supporter, runs the page Jamie Gilt for Gun Sense on Facebook.
