MIAMI (CBSMiami) --  A Central Florida mayor says he plans to visit Cuba and come back on a makeshift raft.

DeBary Mayor Clint Johnson said he plans to do this in mid-April so he can better understand what Cubans go through when crossing the Florida Straits.

"It's a story that's untold. It's to share better the story the men, women and children go through to get here," said Johnson.

Johnson says he plans to visit Havana with his wife then get pieces for the raft there.

"I want the journey to be as authentic as possible," said Johnson.

DeBary- who currently lives in Volusia County- said he came up with the idea when he rode his bike from Tallahassee to Key West back in October.

"That got me thinking," he said.

As for if he's scared, he said "no."

"I've got healthy concerns for the risks involved but I love the adventure," said Johnson.

For his return, he hopes to make it to Key West in about two days.
