Florida Legislators Divided Over Tax Holidays

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) – The Florida House has already passed a bill that calls for sales tax holidays, but legislators are divided over what type of additional tax breaks to offer this year.

In addition to the three day back-to-school holiday, the House also wants a tax holiday on energy efficient appliances, gym memberships and hurricane preparation supplies.

But a key Senate panel, on Thursday, worked on a tax cut package (HB 5601) that would include just the back-to-school holiday.

Instead the Senate bill includes a cut in the state tax charged on cellphones, cable television and home satellite services.

Legislators will spend the next few weeks deciding which tax breaks to include in the legislation.

Gov. Rick Scott has already signed into a law measure that rolls back auto registration fees.
